Anti-Racism Resources and Recommendations |
Good Afternoon JTM Friends, Families, and Students,
Our city experienced an extraordinary peaceful work yesterday at our Tennessee State Capitol. Five magnificent and brave students brought thousands of people together to call for a change in the hearts, minds, behavior, and policies of our government in relation to our community. A number of JTM families and students were there to show their support and lift their voices. Our district’s superintendent, Dr. Adrienne Battle, sent a word out yesterday reminding the city that MNPS is here for our students, families, and staff to do everything we can to become a community that embodies and brings justice, equity, safety, opportunity, and peace through education. In the library, my mission is to bring you the right resources at the right time, in tandem with the mission of Metro Schools. I offer you two incredible lists for families and students looking for stories, language, and tools that offer readers avenues for becoming anti-racist in our deep heart’s core. The Beloved Community link is a scaffold of videos, podcasts, activities, and books that support our parents, caregivers, and staff who want to enter more deeply into this work. The Black Lives Matter link is a list of middle grade stories that do the extraordinary-ordinary work of lifting up & amplifying lived realities that have been historically, systemically, and pervasively silenced, marginalized, exploited, and under-represented in our culture. Each title links to the public library’s copy for you to check out!

As I have said in the past, to love a city, a school, or a person, is to love a process. We are over and over again in our lives, a beginning. May we have the courage, humility, bravery, and compassion to love ourselves and to support each other on our journey to becoming a beloved community, where we lift every voice.
Trying to set a table for a future full of safety and welcome for all,
Ms. Dark

Spring News 2020
JTM Family and Friends (and WELCOME incoming 4th grade students and caregivers!),
Here comes the summer. And along with it, our summer reading adventures. My deep hope is that this summer will be restful for all and that we will have time to process these last few months with compassion.
As we collect stories to comfort or distract, I also hope we will PLAY together. Please consider teaming up with all of JT Moore to become the number 1 school in Nashville’s summer reading challenge. The top 10 schools are listed each day on the NPL website. Here is what you need to do to show our school’s got game:
All of my love and support,

A short video I sent to the students can be found here. I’ve adapted a Wendell Berry poem and I call it “How to Be a Reader (to remind myself)”

The top 10 schools are listed each day on the NPL website. Here is what you need to do to show our school’s got game:
- Help your student sign up for the summer reading challenge here: Summer Reading Challenge You can sign yourself and your students up together. Be sure you let them know what grade they will be in come fall and that they are from JT Moore!
- Encourage your student to read EVERY DAY AND LOG THOSE MINUTES! Even just 20 minutes a day will help them begin to trust the process of entering into a story. It IS a process, and it takes practice. If you need permission from an expert in the field, go ahead and just make it a part of your schedule! There you have it!
- Finally, be sure to look at all of the ebooks and audiobooks that are free and available for checkout at the public library. I made you a video tutorial to show you how to do it and how to download apps for tablets and phones here: https://jtmoorelibrary.weebly.com/summer-reading.html. Just about every book you can think of is there for the taking. * Don’t worry about books not returned! Due dates have been postponed for the time being and you are not fined or blocked for overdue books!
All of my love and support,
Ms. Dark

Welcome to the new normal, JT Moore Community.
I’m thinking about all the ways many of you are juggling your new normal and wondering if I can offer some reading recommendations for you. I’ve heard from many in our community via social media, emails, telephone, and even on my daily walks! It seems clear that a good story for this time is always welcome. I have put together an extensive list of books to shelter in and with!
The Nashville Public Library has started their summer reading program early so sign up NOW to log those minutes reading! Sign up online here: https://npl.readsquared.com/. Be sure to put the grade you will be in next year, tell them you’re from JTM, and download the mobile app!
JTM is in competition with the entire district in our very own reading challenge starting MONDAY! The contest runs from April 20-May 20. There will be prizes and major bragging rights for the school that logs the most minutes. Students sign up for this reading challenge by clicking here: https://mnpsjtmoore.beanstack.com/users/sign_in. Then follow these three steps:
Finally, here is my personal summer reading recommendation presentation and below are some additional lists I look to and love. Ms. Dark’s Reading Recs!
Reading during this unusual time can be especially helpful. Stories help us make sense of hard-to-make-sense-of things. They also help us to not feel alone. One day we will tell our own stories about the time the whole world stopped. When we do, we will use the best words, poems, and visions we gathered in the books and stories we read to build our own way of expressing who we are and what we saw!
Bring on the wonder,
Ms. Dark
